Other Appointments

Adjunct Appointmentsexpand_more

Specifies persons from a non-instructional institution and persons whose professional career is primarily outside of University instruction. Must be performing primarily instructional activities. In some circumstances the title may be appropriate for those whose full-time continuing teaching assignments are practicum-oriented. All new appointments to adjunct titles must have the prior approval of the Dean/Director of the division. Requests for such approval must indicate why an adjunct rather than lecturer title is appropriate. Such requests must be accompanied by a professional biography of the candidate.

Use of this title is subject to semi-annual audit by the Office of Human Resources. Modified professorial functions have four prefixes or levels: Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. The specific definition of each level for professorial academic staff titles is left to the purview of each unit in which the title is employed. However, differences between successively higher title levels must reflect demonstrable differences in experience and knowledge gained, applied to the specific duties of the function. See guidelines and procedures for more information.

Affiliate Appointmentsexpand_more

Affiliate faculty appointments allow faculty members to be associated (to hold affiliations) with a department without governance rights or continuing departmental commitment. Affiliations are defined in Faculty Policies and Procedures (FPP) ch. 5.13. Affiliations may be granted by departmental executive committees, only to probationary and tenured faculty and to academic staff, and only for fixed terms. See guidelines and procedures for more information.

The $0 Emeritus Professor appointment requires prior approval from CALS Human Resources. See guidelines and procedures for more information.

Professor L/I Appointmentsexpand_more

Units within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) may wish to provide a Professor L/I (locator institution) appointment to tenured faculty at other University of Wisconsin institutions for a variety of reasons, including increased collaboration and academic affiliations between UW-related institutions. The Professor L/I appointment requires prior approval from CALS Human Resources. See guidelines and procedures for more information.

Visiting/Honorary Appointmentsexpand_more

This title designates the holder of a fellowship (usually postdoctoral) administered outside the University or a courtesy appointment for a visiting scholar. This temporary appointment is used to provide an official University affiliation and identification without pay. Appointment duration can be requested for a maximum of three years with the option to extend, pending CALS HR approval.

Volunteersexpand_more

Volunteers supplement the work done by employees, but do not replace the need for paid staff. A department should not rely on volunteers to perform duties that are typically performed by permanent employees—other than on a short-term basis.
