Accent Bias: How Can We Minimize Discrimination In The Workplace?

Resource Description

Accents are an integral part of our identity. They are also prone to quick judgments and stereotypes.

Accent bias may be defined as an unwarranted and unjustifiable prejudice toward individuals and communities who speak a language with an accent different from the dominant culture. When you hear someone speaking in a particular accent, you might consciously or unconsciously categorize them into a social class and prejudice. This grouping may lead you to decide, for example, that they are unsophisticated or unintelligent. Research in the United States has shown that accent bias can lead to unequal access to employment, housing, and education.

These resources discuss the concept of accent bias and offer multiple recommendations and tips to help minimize accent discrimination.
